Recently I won a computer in a lottery at work. We were getting rid of "old" PCs. I kind of felt I earned one just by being integral in making the switch from the old computers to the new ones. But I played the lottery like everyone else, figuring my odds to be about 1 in 2. Even when I won some people felt I had too many computers at home and didn't deserve to win. I guess you can't win when you are in IT.
However, there was a certain truth to the statement. I already have two PCs. One serves as my primary PC for daily activities, and the other is my homemade gaming PC. I got the new PC home and I was not sure what to do with it. It's not a bad PC either: a P4 Dell Optiplex with 512MB RAM.
So I have decided to make it a Linux PC. Its been a long time since I played around with Linux and I wanted to try again. But now that I am sitting down here with a Linux box, I am not sure what to do with it. This all seems oddly familiar.
I think I will make it into a multimedia server. The SlimServer software for my Squeezebox comes in a Linux flavor and it would be helpful to take the overhead off of my main PC. Memory is starting to get tight on it. But iTunes doesn't come in a happy Apple Linux version. So, where to store my music? Either way, it will require getting my Linux machine talking on the network to my windows machines. Now I have a challenge. Should be fun.
But First, I need a new switch. I have run out of ports. Right now I have unplugged the Squeezebox to plug in the Linux box.
Actually, I'm more difficult when I am around
